This month Rachel and I have been celebrating after we came joint first in the July Salford Sup competition for our new project idea.
The Salford Sup is a quarterly event held by Salford Social Enterprise City, which is a campaign and support group made up of VCSE organisations across the city. The Sup sees the chance for participants to win the vote of their fellow social entrepreneurs, by pitching their idea through networking around the room with as many people as possible. Attendees also get to sample delicious food – this month it was in the Union Canteen at the Angel centre. Tickets are £10 but free for any participants who live or work in Salford.
We had practised our pitch just hours before and while I (for the first time ever) stuck to my prompt cards for my pitch, Rachel spoke from the heart and got us lots of votes for our new idea – so much so we came joint first with another fantastic project called Alive Podcasts!
So what is our new project?
Well That Toy Thing! takes the traditional model of a Toy Library and mixes it with the business model of a subscription box to create an ethical toy hire service that is affordable for parents and environmentally friendly. We will be collecting donations from across Greater Manchester and collating the toys on to a brand new website, where parents will be able to buy ‘toy tokens’ with their monthly subscription and hire the toy boxes for a month. After a month, they will be able to choose to renew the same toys or swap them for different ones!
We will be using the money we won to work on a logo and branding for the project so we can start to build the excitement on social media until we are ready to launch. So watch this space!
If you are a VCSE organisation interested in coming to the next Sup, there’s a chance to pitch your idea at Yellow Jigsaw’s 5th Birthday party on September 18th 2019. You can register here
